3 ways to tap into your creativity

Creativity is not a talent; it’s a way of operating” John Cleese

The artist doesn't have a monopoly on creativity. All of us are creative in what we do, what we say and how we act.
It is an essential part of you to live up to your creative potential.

Fun can get the creative energy firing. When at your work or anywhere, where is the fun in what you are doing? Do you give yourself permission to look at a situation from another angle and are curious to see if it was done a different way what would it look like?

Opportunity accepted means you are stepping into creativity. You are not quite sure where it will lead but you trust your creative potential to give you the answers. Your strength is in knowing that when you operate creatively, looking at new ways, new ideas, open minded , then the solutions will follow. You adopt that positive attitude towards change and see possibilities.

Find the Beauty in your life. If you want to see creativity in action then look to yourself, to your surroundings, to the work that you do. Creativity is in you and it surrounds you, it's just that you may not have been paying attention.

What are you trying to achieve?
What are your goals?
Do you want to get in better shape?
Do you want that promotion?
Find the beauty in what you want and what you do and you will recognise that you are creative.

NeedToHaveToWantToLoveTo

What energises you to get up every morning, to do what you do and propel you through the day?
Does it come from what you need to do, what you have to do, what you want to do, what you love to do? Answer - All of the above.

Here I will use Abraham Maslow's research into human psychology and the development of the hierarchy of needs to explain. For me, the needs pyramid made sense, it was simple and it is still very relevant to what motivates us.

The Needs Pyramid was broken into 5 -

At the base, there are the basic needs, we all need - food, drink, warmth, shelter, sex, sleep... this is followed by safety needs, we all want protection, security, stability and the hierarchy moves to love and belonging to self esteem, i.e. status, reputation, responsibility and the tip of Maslow Hierarchy is self actualisation described as personal growth and fulfilment.

To me this is not linear,  not an hierarchy, that is, once you have one, you can move up the pyramid to the next one and so on. The needs mingle together and the focus of my motivation will change, dependent on if that need is being met.

The Simple becomes Interesting

This is where the simple becomes very interesting, I know if I stayed at the basic needs, just motivated to work to satisfy the needs of just being alive, the things I need to have, the food to eat, the house to live in, I know that would not keep me motivated. It would not propel me through the day.
The areas of this pyramid of Want To and Love To are what inspire us to set the WHY in our life, figure out the WHAT and the HOW to improve our status, build our relationships and see our lives grow and experience fulfilment.

Our life is full of NeedToHaveToWantToLoveTo, just make more space for the Love To.

Here are the self actualising characteristics, can you tick these off in your life on a regular basis?

maslow's self-actualizing characteristics

  • keen sense of reality - aware of real situations - objective judgement, rather than subjective
  • see problems in terms of challenges and situations requiring solutions, rather than see problems as personal complaints or excuses
  • need for privacy and comfortable being alone
  • reliant on own experiences and judgement - independent - not reliant on culture and environment to form opinions and views
  • not susceptible to social pressures - non-conformist
  • democratic, fair and non-discriminating - embracing and enjoying all cultures, races and individual styles
  • socially compassionate - possessing humanity
  • accepting others as they are and not trying to change people
  • comfortable with oneself - despite any unconventional tendencies
  • a few close intimate friends rather than many surface relationships
  • sense of humour directed at oneself or the human condition, rather than at the expense of others
  • spontaneous and natural - true to oneself, rather than being how others want
  • excited and interested in everything, even ordinary things
  • creative, inventive and original
  • seek peak experiences that leave a lasting impression
